Stepping Stones First Soccer Match

We had our very first soccer tournament with the Pure! Dream Centre on the 11th August 2011! It was held at First Steps school, at the West Baray Lake. The event was jointly planned by the Sports Coaches and volunteers from First Steps and the Dream centre.  The field was prepared by our sports volunteer Sjors, from Holland, who kindly donated the sports materials – balls, goals and nets, and our brand new sports uniforms!

The Pure! team arrived in great style ready to play! the morning was filled with games of football, lots of cheering and even some swimming in the West Baray Lake!

The Stepping Stones team scored 3 goals, and each goal was celebrated by a loud chant from the sidelines “Stepping Stones Winner!”

This event is the first experience for our students and the community, and it was very successful! Both teams played great, had lots of fun and they did their schools proud!

We are looking forward to a rematch later in the year!

Harvest Cambodia Teacher Training June/July 2011

First Steps welcomed our first teacher training program on the 27th June to 8th July 2011, through our Australian partner organisation Harvest Cambodia.

A group of 5 Australian Teachers from Queensland and Victoria worked together with So to create and deliver a positive and engaging two week training program. In depth workshops focused on:

- Classroom Management
- Positive Teaching
- Creating Lesson Plans
- Teaching Techniques
- Motivating students

Also joining the Teachers were 2 highly skilled nurses, Jean and Laura Bratby. Together they worked with our teachers and trainees to equip them with first aid skills, necessary for treating students at First Steps School.

It was an extremely successful trip for all involved, the teachers and trainees have learned a new range of skills and are already using them in their classrooms!

We are looking forward to the next trip scheduled for December/January!

First Steps Grand Opening Day

The First Steps School Grand Opening Day was held on Tuesday 28th June 2011 and was a successful morning with over 400 people attending, including overseas guests, Cambodian honorary guests and members of the local community.

The morning program consisted of speeches by Mr  So Sok and Miss Rachel Merchant the co-directors of Stepping Stones Cambodia,  Mr Doug Shobbrook, director of Harvest Cambodia and Mr Evon Pov, Siem Reap Town deputy leader. Following speeches each First Steps student was presented with a gift of a book, pen and pencil, the planting of a tree, a school tour and the official cutting of the ribbon.

It marked a very special day for the Stepping Stones team, as it showed the growing support we have from the village leader, the community of Kok Thnot and the surrounding villages.

We would like to thank all involved in the Grand Opening Day especially our dedicated team that worked so hard to make this day one to always remember.
