Projects

The tourism industry is what drives Siem Reaps’ economy and subsequent future. The temples of Angkor bring over 2million visitors to the area every year, which in turn create a wealth of job prospects for local people. The ability to speak, read and write English in Cambodia greatly improves career opportunities, which are otherwise unavailable to non English speakers.

The Stepping Stones team understand the disadvantage which the members of Kok Thnot are placed at, because of financial hardship and their rural location. Building an English school in So’s home village was a natural choice for the team, as providing community members, especially the younger generation with access to free quality English Education and Vocational Training paves the way to brighter futures.

General health and hygiene levels in Kok Thnot village are very low, due to lack of adequate medical facilities. This puts members of the community at a preventable disadvantage which Stepping Stones is determined to alleviate.

We are presently working in close partnership with senior community members to plan the construction of a healthcare facility. We are delighted to announce that we have secured land for the health centre, kindly donated to us from the community.

NEXT STEPS

Our current priority is securing long term financial assistance for this project, as well as start up construction costs. We fully appreciate the scale of this task, but we are committed to giving the community what they so rightfully need.

We are also in the process of forging relationships with highly experienced individuals who will form part of the healthcare team. Please see our get involved for more information.

Organic Farming plays a crucial role in supporting rural Cambodian communities reach sustainability. Living off the land is an inherent part of life for many of the villagers of Kok Thnot, and Stepping Stones recognises the importance of protecting this traditional way of life.

Offering the community members of Kok Thnot the opportunity to broaden their skills through specialised training, workshops, and ongoing support will have a powerful impact not only on a local level, but will also on a wider community level.

NEXT STEPS

This project is in the planning phase, and we hope to roll this out later this year.

Cambodia today faces several significant environmental concerns, predominantly inadequate waste disposal, poor sanitation facilities, insufficient access to clean drinking water and a general lack of consciousness in regard to local, national and global environmental issues.

We are currently developing a clean drinking water initiative in Kok Thnot, which will provide over 100 local families with clean, safe water. Each family will receive a 1.5 year supply of water purification sachets, whilst Stepping Stones works towards securing a long term sustainable clean water supply with BioSand water filters.

NEXT STEPS

Stepping Stones has distributed the water purification sachets, and provided compulsory training to ensure villagers are comfortable and confident in using them effectively. We will regularly monitor the progress of this initiative and provide ongoing support to families where needed.
